Resilience and Hope: The Lives of Polio Victims and

A Chance Encounter That Shook Me

He had come to collect a tricycle.

Every month, the Gatan Marayu Foundation distributes mobility tricycles to people living with disabilities across Kano — a small gesture, really, but one that can completely change a life. I was there that day, coordinating and taking case histories, when he arrived. At first glance, he looked like any other young man — maybe mid-twenties, but then of course he wasn't like any other young man: he had a strongly built upper body with muscular arms..........but no legs..........

.Just stumps, ending above the knees. My breath caught. For a moment, everything else faded away. I stood there, disturbed, my heart tightening with a deep ache I couldn’t shake. I thought of my own grown sons — strong, tall, full of restless energy. I imagined this young man as he could have been, if life had been kinder: with two strong legs, walking confidently through the streets of Kano, chasing ambitions, living freely.

But that was not his reality. And in this city, where even the able-bodied fight tooth and nail for survival, his chances seemed unbearably slim.

Still, as I looked closer, another feeling began to stir in me — something stronger than sadness.

It was in his face. That calm determination. A sort of quiet dignity. He wasn’t there to beg or ask for help beyond what was offered. He was there to receive his tricycle — a tool, not a gift — because he intended to use it. To move. To work. To keep going. He told me he ran a small shop from his house. A modest business, but his own. Honest work. The kind that requires resolve, patience, and strength — not of the body, necessarily, but of the spirit.

And he had that in abundance.

Handicapped Individuals in Kano

In the heart of Northern Nigeria, particularly in Kano, the shadows of Polio's devastating impact linger on. This region has been marked by the highest prevalence of polio worldwide, leaving many individuals grappling with the effects of this debilitating disease. Yet, amid the challenges, stories of resilience and hope emerge from the streets and the dilapidated homes where these brave souls reside.

The Daily Struggles

Walking through the lively streets of Kano, it's impossible not to notice the harsh realities faced by polio victims and other disabled individuals. Mostly moving about on all fours, their hands are protected by rubber slippers against the rough ground. The streets, often strewn with debris and dirt, present significant obstacles, yet these individuals find ways to adapt and endure. They frequently beg on the streets, positioned at car exhaust level, hoping to receive some money. Their limbs are often notably thinner, shorter, twisted and dysfunctional. They move around on all fours, living a life at a different level!

Creativity in Adversity

Among the younger handicapped individuals, creativity becomes a lifeline. Many have crafted makeshift skateboards, ingeniously designed to help them move around with greater ease. These little contraptions, often made from discarded materials, allow them to glide along the uneven surfaces of their environment. With their slipper-clad hands they manouvre around cars, begging for money for their daily income. This inventive spirit is a testament to their determination to overcome obstacles. While they may face societal stigma and physical barriers, their creativity reveals a profound resilience that cannot be overlooked.

Hope for the Future

In the face of adversity, the people of Kano remind us that hope is a powerful force, Each day, they rise to face their challenges with courage and creativity. Their stories of resilience inspire us to advocate for change, to push for better living conditions by rasing funds, building a society that embraces inclusivity! The journey toward a brighter future for these individuals is ongoing; but it is one that can be paved with compassion, understanding and action. By raising awareness and funds, we can collectively contribute to a world where everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, has the opportunity to thrive.

Let us stand with them, amplifying their voices and celebrating their resilience as they continue to navigate the streets of life with unwavering determination.
