Empowering Women Through SFC Groups in Kano: A Story of Growth and Resilience
Since 2020, seven Self-Financing Community (SFC) groups have been established through Gatan Marayu Foundation in Kano, Nigeria, transforming the financial landscape for local women. The first three groups, which have been running successfully since 2020, laid a strong foundation for this initiative and their impact continues to grow.
At the outset, members of these groups could only access small loans of ₦5,000 (about $3) each. However, through collective dedication, financial discipline and growing trust within the groups, they are now able to support one another with loans as high as ₦50,000 ($30) and ₦60,000 ($36). This remarkable tenfold increase in loan capacity stands as a testament to the strength of the initiative and the determination of the women involved.
Beyond financial progress, these groups have fostered powerful social connections among their members. Women who once hesitated to invest or expand their businesses now show a remarkable sense of confidence and capability. Through shared experiences, mentorship, and mutual support, they have built a thriving network where financial, emotional and professional support go hand in hand.
The success of the SFC groups in Kano highlights the power of community-driven financial systems. By equipping women with the tools to manage and grow their resources, we've seen a ripple effect: stronger families, more resilient businesses and empowered women contributing meaningfully to their communities.
As these groups continue to grow, they serve as an inspiring model for economic empowerment and gender equality in Kano.
